Quite possibly it will be. Cookery students at the Latvian Agriculture University in Jelgava (Latvia, obviously) will attempt today to make a 100m long sandwich and thus set a world record. Although there’s been no shortage of people trying to break previous records for the world’s largest sandwich, there appears to be no clear winner when it comes to the longest one. An Iranian shot at it in 2008 ended in chaos after onlookers started tucking in before cooks had finished making it and had it officially measured. The other candidate for the title was a paltry 44m giant baguette made by Mexican caterers, also in 2008.

Today’s bid requires 529 loaves of bread, 36Kg of cheese, 36Kg of ham, 30Kg of cucumbers, 35Kg of mayonnaise, 30Kg of tomatoes, 10Kg of lettuce, and 1.4Kg of mustard. When, or rather if, it’s finished it’ll briefly go on display at the university, before being eaten by those present – though if they have any sense they’ll follow my golden rule of never eating buffet food. Regardless, let’s wish the students luck with their sandwich course . . . .
