Shortly after the massive 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which killed hundreds of thousands of people and weakened fault lines around the globe, evidence of a ‘miracle’ became clear (apparently). The only buildings to remain standing in many of the areas otherwise levelled by the tsunami that followed were the mosques:
Just as hurricane Katrina’s annihilation of New Orleans was later interpreted by some as God unleashing His wrath against the USA for reasons that are far too numerous to list here many saw the destruction and human tragedy caused by the Boxing Day tsunami as a sign from Allah (swt). His punishment for not praying enough, for the growing tolerance towards homosexuality, for fornicating, etc, etc. That so many mosques were spared suggested that He had protected them from destruction. Or simply that they were constructed better than surrounding buildings . . . .
None of us can prove whether or not divine intervention was at work, but during last Wednesday’s 7.6-magnitude earthquake that devastated parts of western Sumatra everything – to quote the head of the Indonesian Health Ministry’s crisis centre, Rustam Pakaya – was sucked ‘30m deep into the earth. Even the mosque’s minaret, more than 20m tall, disappeared’.
So, what the hell does that indicate then?
