Now this is what I call a summer camp worth sending children to. According to a report in The Sunday Times , prominent evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is to fund a summer school aimed at encouraging children aged eight to seventeen to think for themselves. The five day retreat in Somerset will offer lessons in evolutionary biology and moral philosophy, whilst debunking the myths surrounding strange phenomena such as crop circles.
With the motto ‘It’s beyond belief!’ the school seeks to offer a non-believers alternative to faith based camps, where believers send their children to be indoctrinated and brainwashed. Heaven help me for saying such a thing – and on a Sunday too. No doubt religious bullies and zealots will object to the project, as God forbid anyone should undermine them, but it gets two big thumbs up from me. Perhaps it should be televised. It would certainly make better viewing than the usual ‘fat camp’ or ‘ASBO boot camp’. . . .
Addendum – It appears that The Sunday Times completely exaggerated the financial and personal involvement of Richard Dawkins in the project, and grossly misrepresented the camp in question:
