So, for the boring bit first – the figures.
According to today’s El Mundo, 14% of Spanish youngsters *would* vote for a racist political party. That’s up by 3% in six years. Also, two-thirds of the Spanish youth consider there to be excessive immigration – into Spain, that is. The lower the socio-economic background, the more likely they are to consider the number of immigrants excessive.
On the other hand, 48% of those surveyed also see a positive side to immigration, but the youngest of those polled seemed to have the most negative opinion of immigration.
The least trustworthy immigrants are considered, by those questioned, to be North Africans and Rumanians. Whereas Latino immigrants and those from Sub-Saharan Africa are considered most trustworthy.
Undeniably fascinating stuff, but what about the REAL question: where do the Brits abroad fit into all of this? It must be a cover up. I can’t believe for one minute that the beer swilling, medallion wearing football yobs with their chip shop faces and little England lifestyles didn’t even warrant a mention. This is shocking.
Of course, I shouldn’t brand all of my fellow countrymen with the same brush. There are, I believe, a total of seven Britishers living in Spain who don’t own a “casa” on an urbanisation, and who have actually learnt to speak the lingo. I apologise to those magnificent and integrated seven.
As for the rest – those who fled to Spain with naught but a pair of Union Flag trunks, a half-sovereign ring, and an England shirt on their backs – well where do they, those ex-pat Brits, figure in the minds of the young Spaniards? I want, no, I need, to know this.
Further research, please.
